2. I have an internship or intend to apply for an internship after graduation. Can I take a leave of absence from the doctoral program to complete a legal articling? The Faculty of Law offers a Master of Laws Studies (M.S.L.) Curriculum for a small number of non-lawyers who wish to acquire a fundamental knowledge of legal thinking and explore the relationship of law to their disciplines. Yale Law School`s Doctor of Science in Law (J.S.D.) program is a selected doctoral program for graduates of Yale`s LL.M. program who wish to pursue a career in law and scholarship. In collaboration with other Yale University schools and departments, the School of Law offers programs leading to a master`s degree and a J.D. (Juris Doctor) or a Ph.D. and a J.D. Students interested in a career as a law professor should generally expect to enter the workforce during their third year in the program. PhD candidates have access to the same wide range of support in this endeavor that Yale Law School currently offers to its students, alumni, and fellows entering the law market.

Otherwise, students spend the third year completing their dissertation and, in many cases, completing a second teaching experience. Students are generally expected to complete the program after three years, but requests to extend the program beyond three years are considered on a case-by-case basis. In such cases, funding may be limited. If you wish, you can submit practical legal writing as an additional writing sample, but you should also submit a law scholarship. The Doctor of Laws program is designed to prepare candidates for careers in law, and your previous law scholarship is the best testament to your future potential. Applications for admission to the Doctor of Laws program are open from August 15. The deadline for submission of all documents is December 15. Applicants to the Juris Doctor program must earn a JD degree from a U.S. law school prior to enrolling and the doctoral program. PhD candidates In law programs, they should know the area of law in which they wish to specialize and be prepared to express this interest in a research proposal.

However, applicants` research proposals should not be as refined as a thesis prospectus, and the nature of students` projects and interests should evolve during their participation in the program. Each student will have a faculty advisory board that works with the student to develop the research project into a thesis prospectus and possibly a thesis – which can take the form of three large, publishable articles that could appear in a leading legal journal, or a manuscript the length of a single book. This may include: (1) working as a teaching assistant for a law course; (2) Teaching assistant for a course at Yale College or another Yale school; (3) co-teach a course with a Yale Law School faculty member; (4) Lead a Yale Law School reading group course; (5) teach an independent seminary at one of Yale`s residential colleges; or, (6) in unusual situations, teach their own course. In all cases, students who meet their teaching requirements are supervised by the faculty and kept in close contact and feedback by their advisors.

The particular teaching assignment and timing of this requirement will be determined by the applicant in consultation with his/her advisory and/or thesis committee, but generally applicants will meet the first of their teaching requirements in the second semester of the second year of the program. Le Ph.D. In law, Young Women graduates are designed to prepare for careers as lawyers and teachers through a doctoral program aimed at producing in-depth academic research and writing skills under the strict supervision of a three-member thesis committee. 4. I don`t have a JD degree from a U.S. law school, but I do have a first law degree from a university outside the United States. Can I apply for the Doctor of Laws program? The Doctor of Legal Sciences (J.S.D.) The program is a select program that is open only to graduates of the LL.M. program at Yale Law School. After passing the second aptitude test, candidates formed a faculty thesis committee. This committee will often, but not necessarily, include the same faculty members who served on the nominee`s initial advisory board. During their second year, students will work with their thesis committees to make their thesis prospectus a success. The thesis itself should take the form of a manuscript the length of a book or three publishable legal journal articles; It usually represents a portfolio of letters that students can use in the job market. Once the thesis prospectus is approved, students must spend the remainder of their time in the program, including summer, research, and thesis writing.

While we welcome applications from third-year law students, many applicants will have spent at least one year after law school in a law internship. We are aware that the persistent mess in the internship market has affected graduate planning for many students, and we will offer the opportunity to take time off during the program to take advantage of an internship opportunity. Applicants to the doctoral program must be open about their articling plans in their applications and must keep the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs of the Faculty of Law informed of any developments that occur after the submission of their applications. The Yale Law School Juris Doctor program is specifically designed for candidates who graduate young women from U.S. law schools. Students enjoy the small class sizes and camaraderie of graduates and Young Women students, the intimacy of a small program, and a close relationship with Yale Law School faculty.
